Thanks Filippo. I'm going to start working on that. If the developer originally planning on doing it has made any progress already I can take it over if he is too busy, as my work plans to pay me to fix it, and I have time to do it. I can then contribute the updated vlm code back to the vlc community.

VLM code was removed from libvlc-control because it was tagged as
broken, and the developer who started the rework of vlm has not finished
it yet. I don't know what is the best way to handle this situation, but
I would propose to:
* create a branch for the rework on VLM
* backport the original vlm code to trunk so that it is usable again
(even if not fully working)
* when VLM rework is done, merge the branch to trunk
