If vlc is a libtool wrapper script, you can probably run   libtool gdb
./vlc   or something like that.

If you're using gdb under emacs, you may have to create a wrapper
script gdb-libtool that just runs libtool gdb and passes the arguments
of the wrapper script at the end of the command line.  This is because
some emacs implementations insert gdb arguments after the first item
on the command line and the arguments have to go to gdb instead of
libtool.
