If that is your problem, then causing make install to explicitly fail with
DESTDIR and slow-install seems much better. Some people do build binary
packages from git or from source snapshots too...

I don't really care because I have --disable-fast-install in my configure
script. But such a change is going to suck big time in the bugfix branch.
