IMO, we should only have a single stable branch at a time, which would  
be 0.9.0 pretty soon. Thus, I agree with you to drop 0.8.6 in favour  
of maintaining a current code base. As you said, 0.8.6 is severely  
over-aged by now.

I would replace the existing paragraph in the NEWS file by the  
original line stating something like "This interface lacks the  
'Streaming Wizard' that used to be present in VLC 0.8.6. It will be  
replaced by customizable profiles in the next release. Please make use  
of the Stream Output features in the Open dialog for the meantime."
In fact, my SoC student will start to work on this pretty soon and if  
it works out nicely, we will have something working just right in time  
for 0.9.1. For the meantime, the Qt4 users will need to use the stream  
output dialogues, which were nicely re-worked for 0.9.0 anyway. For  
existing users working with the Streaming Wizard, it shouldn't be hard  
at all to adapt to these dialogues.
