I have to disagree with you here.

Keyshortcuts, dir, files are "just string", but they have a special
item, because it is easier then to handle the special cases, and
especially building the preferences windows. Same for skins chooser...

I don't really see why you are so much against it, since it is not going
to change many things in the core nor impact the modules that don't
touch the preferences.
