[vlc-devel] Keeping git tree up-to-date

I hope this isn't a question that has been answer before but I am
unfamiliar with git.  What is the proper way to keep a git tree
up-to-date?  I tried git pull --rebase then

git stash
git pull --rebase
git stash apply

The net result was a scrambled source tree that would not build.  What
is the proper way to do this?
