It has always been and will always be hackish, until 1.2 and also from 1.2 
onward. It is a fact of life that VLC command line options depend:
- on the VLC version,
- on the compilation options,
- on the set of installed plugins,
- on the platform (at some point even on the CPU architecture!),
- indirectly, on the local VLC preferences (if enabled).

So any attempt to use them is bound to explode somewhere and/or sometime. 
Input item options are a subset of command line options, so the same analysis 
applies.
