They do carry a version in their .hh files.

groupsock/include/groupsock_version.hh:#define
GROUPSOCK_LIBRARY_VERSION_STRING "2011.11.08"
liveMedia/include/liveMedia_version.hh:#define
LIVEMEDIA_LIBRARY_VERSION_STRING "2011.11.08"

But yeah.. the link to live-latest.tar.bz2 does make it tricky.
