I think the plan is to wait for Qt 4.8.1 or 4.8.2 to avoid the usual set
of regressions supposedly plaguing Qt 4.x.0.

Do I gather that there is no need to patch the VLC module at all?

Patches should be grouped atomically by fixes, not by files changed.
