It looks like Felix removed it because the Resources folder was already removed, so adding back the deleted code and the Resources folder may get it working again.

I think that Felix remove this line because set the background operation fail in OS X Lion. I'm testing this line and I receive the same error:

from the dmg_setup.scpt
set background picture of theViewOptions to file ".background/background.png"

When I made a "make package-macosx" I receive the following error.
osascript "."/extras/package/macosx/dmg_setup.scpt "vlc-2.1.0-git"
./extras/package/macosx/dmg_setup.scpt:604:681: execution error: Finder got an error: Can’t set file ".background/background.png" of disk "vlc-2.1.0-git" to file ".background/background.png" of disk "vlc-2.1.0-git". (-10006)

I will investigate this error
