Yes, this is a known issue like I confirmed in your trac ticket:

I cannot give any time frame when it will be supported as it needs changes to the architecture of VLC for iOS.

Since HLS is supported natively by iOS (it was developed by Apple for iOS after all), this isn't a top-priority issue for me.
