As Eduardo stated, it is not in an RFC, but a lot of people are using it.
This forum discussion was the motivation for this patch:
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=98342 . According to one of
the forum posts, BSPlayer uses this convention.

Also, it should not break regular subtitles, but it assumes that if you
have a video name VIDEO_NAME + "." + VIDEO_EXT and the subtitle is named
VIDEO_NAME + "." + SOMETHING + "." + SUBTITLE_EXT, SOMETHING is the
language information.
