It works in the sense that the code is well defined. However the log
message will be discarded, so it is not terribly useful in practice. That
is why I never finished that "mode" of operation.

Debug logs without objects would be nice from code perspective. But even
if the messages were simply dumped on the standard error by default, I do
not know how to determine the verbosity without an instance.
