I'd also say that having separate options for both plugins is cleaner.
Besides, the overhead in configure.ac is only minimal. What would be
more interesting in my opinion is to detect the presence of MMAL headers
(and thus RPI) and enable both plugins by default.

No, we need a way to associate pictures with their vd. I also don't see
how pictures could outlive a vd. In Close, we destroy the picture pool
and more importantly, all MMAL buffer headers. All pictures that remain
somewhere in the core would be invalid.

Indeed, bcm_host_deinit is currently just a no-op.

As Rémi pointed out in the other mail, this is problematic. We would
need a global list of all vd's and notify each one of them in tvservice_cb.

How realistic are multiple vout's? Currently our vout always displays
the video in fullscreen. So there would be no way to actually see more
than one video. Or what exactly is supposed to happen when multiple
video tracks are present?

Actually, we need a way of communicating tvservice events (when you
change the output mode on your display) into the main vout thread. When
that happens, all DispManX structures and handles need to be destroyed
and reinitialized. I don't want this to happen while displaying a
subpicture.

The manage callback seems just fine for this case. It is called
periodically and display won't be called until vd_manage returns. The
alternative would be to handle everything in tvservice_cb and lock
vd_display ourselfs.
