Of course, there is a reason. It predates even me in this project. It is
quite common to have a m3u file in a music "album" directory. Including the
m3u in the listing would cause the pieces from the album to be played
twice. This is ostensibly not what is intended when opening a directory.

Maybe but m3u is by far the most common "offender", and in fact the most
common playlist extension.
