Well, it was not needed so far for the roughly 20 libraries we need to
compile the iOS port. Additionally, I'm very unsure if gettext is
cross-compileable at all, but you probably know more in that regard.

Can you elaborate on that? For the last 12 months, a gettext-free
libvlc was working just fine on iOS.
