problem detail

Hello,
Here is the problem in detail :
I am trying to play a mpeg1 file stored on my linux  6.2 machine. I am giving the command "./vlc [filename]"
The player starts but it does not start playing the file, instead it says "Waiting for stream...". On the terminal I get an error message saying "Start code should have been *** instead of ***". Why is this happening and what should I do... Please help me...
