Subtitles

I have a couple questions about subtitles:

1) Why the big ugly pink letters?
2) Why in the middle of the screen and not at the bottom?
3) Is it just me, or does vlc seem to miss some of the subtitles.  I've
noticed that with subtitles on, in some places as many as half the lines
don't get subtitles.  It doesn't seem to be at all random which ones get
missed tho.  Always the same ones for any given movie.
