Colin Delacroix, Eugenio Jarosiewicz, Samuel Hocevar, and myself.

It is originally a UNIX app. We wrote a CoreAudio plugin and a DVD
kernel extension. For the video we use Carbon (better documentation).

Apparently it is the only way to get YUV overlay support. However
Apple doesn't really help.

This has nothing to do with it. VLC is an MPEG-1/2 decoder, not MPEG-4.

Well, since you mention it, OS/X may have rocked, but unfornately a
lot of APIs are completely non-standard without any reason, and it is
very poorly documented. The OS/X team has had a lot of trouble for
porting VLC. Apple confirms its reputation. As a developer, I have to
warn against using it, until documentation becomes *decent*.
