I've got a Rage 3D mobility (ATI Mach64) with the gatos driver installed.
I've got the same problem which happens both with the xvideo and sdl (overlay
mode) plugins. Sometimes it even crashes my computer, and the "Magic SysRq
key" to reboot the kernel doesn't even work. It really looks like a driver
bug in my case.

But are you using the latest cvs version of vlc? a few xvideo related bugs
have been fixed since the latest release.
