Hi,
I have the same notebook, an A20p.
DVD playback is just gorgeous (much better colors and crispiness of
the picture than WinDVD, in my opinion), and performance is now at
around 15% CPU.
I use XFree 4.0.1 (yes, that is an old version, but it works very
fine with me) with the r128_drv.o module out from CVS. Xvideo and SDL
work fine. I also run at 24bpp which does not cause much of a problem
with vlc - the only thing which occasionally is slightly annoying is
that some colors of other windows get messed up due to overlay.
I run SuSE 7.0 with the old glib 2.1 (I think) but I don't think
that the problem lies there.
Could it be that you use vlc successfully, then suspend your A20p,
go home, resume your notebook and things are messed up? Although I
have now, after some time, managed to get quite a stable suspend/resume,
I have the feeling that it is not (yet) perfectly safe.
If the answer to the above question is yes, simply try to restart
the X server after resume and check whether the problem persists.
Otherwise, forget about this email.
Michael
