vlc audio is noisy

i'm using the esd audio driver and hearing a lot of noisy echoing on
particularly loud times during dvd play.  
i'm relying on using esdmon to pull audio samples off my dvds, does
anyone know a better way to get audio samples off dvds into wav
format?
