Problems with DVD playback

DVD playback is a little slow in fullscreen. It's not choppy, just slow. 
I have tried using vlc 0.2.91 and the latest CVS snapshot. SDL mode 
defaults to a low resolution, which plays fine, but it is too small. 
When I move it up to 1024x768 it is slow again. I tried changing from 
32-bit to 16-bit full screen, but it had no affect. It does the same 
with X11 output. For the most part windowed output is smooth.

Under Windows using WinDVD playback is perfect, it should be the same 
under linux right?
