vlc for mac OS X

I have vlc for Mac OS X (10.1) running on a Beige G3 which has a G4 
upgrade and a third party DVD player.  I was hoping that I could find 
someway to play DVD's under OS 10.1 on my system.  I was able to install 
the Apple DVD player 3.01, but it doesn't see my DVD player and won't 
actually play a CD.  The drive does seem to work (A Toshiba SD-R1002), 
but the system doesn't recognize it as a DVD player.  It seems to work 
fine as a CD player and as a CD writer.

Any suggestions?
