recommended video cards

I'v been happily running vlc on my laptop now (at least until my DVD drive 
committed suicide last week). I'm planning a major upgrade to my desktop, 
one goal of which is to get vlc functioning on it. In fact, that's going 
to determine what video card I get.

So... what chip sets have people had good luck with in XFree 4.1.0 for 
displaying vlc (esp fullscreen)?
