sound problems

Heres some more info.  I noticed that esd wasnt starting when XFree86
started.  I changed that.   Still no change in the sound ouput,
though.  Here is the command I am using: 
"vlc --input dvd /dev/dvd --aout esd --yuv yuv"

The "ac3dec error: invalid mantissa" errors dont happen until I stop the
program via right-click, exit.
