Stupid newbie error

Hi,
I'm guessing I've got some kind of misconfig with X and my NVdriver or
something, but I can't figure out what it is.
I configured vlc with
./configure  --enable-alsa --enable-debug --enable-trace
but changed the Makefile.opts to use -mcpu=i686 -march=i686
and when I try to run it with
vlc -vvvvvv --vout <anything>
i get the output below.
So I tried building without the dummy module, using
./configure  --enable-alsa --enable-debug --enable-trace --disable-dummy --d
isable-mmx
(again changing Makefile.opts)
and instead it would give the later error.
I'm running vlc 2.8.0 on linux 2.4.5, with alsa 0.5.11, glibc 2.2.3 and
xfree 4.1.0 with the NVdriver from nvidia, using the agpgart module.
It's running on an AMD 750 MHz using a RIVA TNT M64 w/ tv out
I've been running vlc as root

Any help would be much appreciated
