vlc on dell inspiron

Hi,
I tried several version of vlc on my inspiron laptop but couldn't
get a working setup. The machine runs Redhat 7.1.
Trying The Matrix I do get sound but the window for the movie itself
stays solid blue (with black top and bottom borders) for SDL and xvideo
mode and completely black vor x11 mode.
The system is a Dell inspiron 8000 with Nvidea geforce2-mobile 32MB
graphics card. I tried both 24bit and 16 bit planes for X. As said it
runs redhat 7.1. I tried several kernels (2.4.2 and 2.4.3 from redhat
and 2.4.5, 2.4.5-ac22 compiled myself).
I also tried the livid player but that one seems to have the same
problem. The ogle player works a bit better for non-encrypted DVDs
but doesn't show video for the matrix either. Vlc and livid do not
show anything for non-encrypted dvds. On windows with windvd
the Matrix plays fine!

Any clues, hints?
PS: vlc works fine on my desktop system with Athlon thunderbird
and Matrox G450.
