New kernel & no sound

RH 7.0, X 4.0.3, NVidia driver 1.0-1251 for my TNT2 32meg card and new
kernel 2.4.6-3.

Under the original RH 2.2.16-22 kernel I used alsa drivers for my via97
and had great playback for both video & audio in conjunction with NVidia
driver.

Since my kernel upgrade yesterday, Via support's built into the kernel
and I'm using the system sound libs, ie arts for KDE. Using the nv
driver from XFree86 I was dead in the water with virtually all
combinations of command line parameters. Now with the new NVidia driver
1.0-1251 my video's back but sound is kaput. I get '/dev/dsp resource
temporarily unavailable'. Then 'can't open esound socket'.

I downloaded & built alsa driver/libs 0.9.0beta5 but they're a no-go.
Documentation only goes thru kernel 2.2 series. Do I have any options
here with my existing setup?
