If you want to find where the problem is, procede gradually, don't try the 
dvd input at first. Find a simple mpeg file on your hard drive and use:
"vlc nameofyourfile.mpeg"
If this doesn't work, send the debug output you've got when running:
"vlc -vvvvv nameofyourfile.mpeg"
