Slackware 8 Hell

has anyone successfully gotten vlc 0.2.81 to run on slackware 8 ? im at
a loss i have it running on one machine and the other does nothing, ive
edited the Makefile.opts
and gnome craps out during compilation. ive edited it and added the
library paths and it compiles with no errors but nothing starts. im
starting to think im crazy.... i also tried playing an mpeg file and it
just seg faults ? hmmmmm any help would be incrediable at this time ?
