First, the default source tree works -just fine-. :) Don't hand-hack unless
you absolutely need to.

Second, make sure you have the proper libraries installed. I'm having a hell
of a time getting a proper Qt- or KDE-based VLC, but GNOME works just fine.

Third, by default, configure looks for gtk-config in /usr/bin. Make a
symlink [*] from /opt/gnome/bin/gtk-config to /usr/bin/gtk-config. I've also
got a symlink from /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-config to /usr/bin/gnome-config, but
I don't know if that's strictly necessary.

Fourth, run ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-gnome

Fifth, run `make vlc'.

Sixth, run `make vlc plugins'.

Seventh, type `./vlc --intf gnome' and see if you get a menu or not.

Good luck!

... And yes, it really DOES work on Slack 8. I've spent today watching DVDs
on my Slack 8 box, quite happily, might I add. :)
