Are you talking about fullscreen or just windowed mode. Because I think (I'm not sure, I will have to check the X11 plugin code) one difference between the x11 output and the SDL output is that in fullscreen mode SDL will change the resolution of the display to the one of the decoded video. So basically SDL won't loose any processing time in rescaling when in fullscreen mode.

If even in Window mode (and software rendering) you can spot a performance difference, then that means I'm totally wrong ;-)
