Hmmm... thanks Chong, maybe you're right. To give a little background:
I upgraded from the original patched 2.2.2 kernel mainly because it
gave me trouble with nvidias graphics drivers. And I suspected it to
be responsible for the vlc performance downgrade. So I went on to 2.4.4,
with which nvidias drivers work fine. Just the vlc performance penalty
won't vanish. So if I find time to try 2.4.0 again (although I hate
to step back) I let you know the results.
