vlc crashes on Mandrake-8.0

Hi,
	I have :

linux-Mandrake-8.0 on amd-k6-2 processor
XFree86-4.0.3
glibc-2.2
SDL-1.2 (current CVS)

vlc (v2.73 as also May18 and May19 snapshots) doesnot show MPEG video at
all even though it plays sound sometimes. The only video it shows
sometimes is just a display of some color bands. 

It crashes giving error messages such as 

PES trashed - decoder fifo full !

It often hangs (only way out is to kill it).

However, I know for sure that it works much better with XFree86-3.3.6
(redhat-6.2 and suse-6.4) so I think it may have something to do with
XFree86.
