vlc 0.2.90 and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Draggon

I am having problems with playback on my Toshiba Satellite 2805-s201 using 
FreeBSD 4.4-STABLE (20011109) and vlc 0.2.90.  "Crouching Tiger, Hidden 
Dragon" plays well (other than dropped frames) until chapter 27.  A couple 
of seconds into Chapter 27 the playback window goes away and the DVD is no
longer selected for play.  It is like vlc has reset to it's initial state.

Before the following log, I went back and chose to play chapter 28, the last
chapter, from the menus.  My laptop locked up for about 5 seconds then rebooted.

In order to get the following log, I selected chapter 26 from the menu, 
let it play for a few seconds then hit the next chapter button.  I then 
exitted vlc.
