vlc OsX

I am running Os10.1 on a G4 powerbook and would like to be able to play m2v
(SVCD) files. I found the VLC site and downloaded the Mac OSX player
vlc-0.2.90-MacOSX.tar.gz. I expanded the file and it created an application.
However when I open the application I am not able to play files as there is
no viewing window. The open new viewer in the file menu is not available
either. Any assistance that you can give me on how to fix this problem would
be greatly appreciated.
