Thanks for all the help folks. Turns out my biggest problem was that I
had installed vlc as my own user and was trying to fix things as root.
When I just run VLC as myself (not root) it runs with no errors.

Here is what I learned that is important.

Ximian has adopted the newest SDL (1.2). VLC does NOT like this. I
uninstalled 1.2 and installed the 1.1 version from the libsdl.org
website.

Other than that, it was all bozo errors on my part.
