It could indeed be your hardware. I maybe able to guess what's going wrong if you send me a debug log. Try to run "vlc -vvvvv --stdout debug.txt" and send me the file.

Anyway I hope you don't plan to watch any DVD or mpeg2 videos with your computer because my celeron 500 has just enough guts for the job ;-)
