HDIO_SET_DMA failed error with hdparm

Hello,

I'm trying to install vlc and it works but the image is jerky (saccadee in 
french). I found that dma isn't working but it was working with my older kernel 
2.4.2-2(standard with redhat 7.1)! SO i have to chose between DRI and vlc!

I've a Redhat 7.1 linux with updated kernel 2.4.3-12.
I have an AMD athlon 1.4, MSI AMDK7Tpro mainboard
I think (not sure) i have a recent via ide chipset

I have the error

HDIO_SET_DMA failed

with the command

/sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

I compiled my kernel to add DMA support but it doesn't work.

What should i do?
