No output for DVD

Thanks for the advice.  Unfortunately, I do have write
permissions to my DVD device, and it still exhibits
this behavior.  Just for the heck of it, I ran it as
root, but I get the same behavior.  I'm running the
stock Redhat 7.2 kernel (a Redhat variant of 2.4.7). 
<sigh>...
