can not read dvd:/dev/hdc

 I suppose it doesn't find the module to access dvd device.

 Start vlc in verbose mode (vlc -vvvvvvvv) and check that you've got a
similar line :
 module: new plugin module `dvd', DVD input module, uses libdvdcss

 That means vlc found and the "dvd" module. This one is with libdvdcss,
but may be it wasn't built on your system because you do not have
libdvdcss and libdvdcss-dev (if you compile from the sources).
  An alternative is libdvdread, basically it is the same problem :
you need the library and the development package to build a vlc with
dvdread support.
