Problem compiling VLC 0.4.4

I am running RH 7.3, Ximian Gnome 1.4, gcc-2.96-112 and I received the
following error when attempting to compile vlc 0.4.4:

gcc gnome.lo.gnome gnome_interface.lo.gnome gnome_support.lo.gnome
gnome_callbacks.lo.gnome gtk_display.lo.gnome gtk_open.lo.gnome
gtk_control.lo.gnome gtk_menu.lo.gnome gtk_playlist.lo.gnome
gtk_modules.lo.gnome gtk_preferences.lo.gnome gtk_callbacks.lo.gnome 
-lpthread -Wall -shared -L/usr/lib -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lgnomeui -lart_lgpl
-lgdk_imlib -lSM -lICE -lgtk -lgdk -lgmodule -ldl -lXi -lXext -lX11
-lgnome -lgnomesupport -lesd -laudiofile -lm -ldb1 -lglib -o ../gnome.so
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ldb1
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [../gnome.so] Error 1

RPM reports that db1 is installed and that libdb1.so.2 in installed in
/usr/lib.

Is there another db1 file that gcc is looking for?
