To raise the volume, you can use the "volume" config option of vlc either 
from the command line (vlc --volume 1024 for instance) or from the GUI in 
the preferences menu.

As for the video, it looks like the Xvideo extension of the XFree86 X-server 
is not supported by your current setup. If you want to have decent video 
performance, you really need to have this extension working. First you 
should upgrade your XFree86 to the latest available version (4.2.0) and 
check that your graphics card does actually support the Xvideo extension.
