This specific problem comes from the fact that the current version of vlc 
cannot run two interface plugins at once, so you can't have both a GUI and 
the logger interface.
This problem has been solved in the developpement version, but in the 
meantime there are two solutions to your problem:

1 - run a dos command box, go to the directory where you installed vlc 
(should be c:\Program Files\VideoLan\vlc). Then run it with the following 
command: "vlc --intf=intfwin". VLC should then pop-up with the GUI as 
usual, but you'll need to save the preferences if you don't want to repeat 
this step each time you want to run vlc.

2 - remove VLC's config file. This file should be located in your 
"Application Data" folder in a "VideoLan" sub-folder.
