Could you please search your hard drive for libdvdcss ? Vlc uses its own
version of libdvdcss whereas vls uses libdvdread which calls the system
wide libdvdcss.

With current libdvdread, you need libdvdcss-0.0.3 whereas vlc has
libdvdcss-1.0.0 ; that might be the problem.
