brightness problem

Hi,
I really like your program,but Im having a small problem with it.It wont 
allow brightness adjustment even when I adjust gamma under 
preferences.Nothing happens and its resets  to zero when it restarts.Im 
having to use Xine to get more brightness each time I use it.When I set 
it with Xine it stays bright untill it is shut down.Do you need more 
info to help me or anything?
