In general I think you're better off
doing:
rm config.cache config.status
./configure [with whatever options you want]
cp [your vlc tar.gz file to /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES]
rpm -ba vlc.spec
This should find the correct versions of SDL and
other things. (if the vlc is lookiung for libSDL-1.1,
libSDL-1.2 might not do, for example)
