lirc interface

Hi,
I'd like to use the lirc interface to vlc, but I would like to retain the gtk 
interface also as I feel the lirc interface only complements it, but doesn't 
yet replace it. Is this currently possible - so far the only luck I've had in 
getting the lirc interface to work is to specify it as the user interface - 
which disables the other interface.
