 You cannot emulate the functions of the dvd drive with just a "dd-read"
of the whole disc. During playback, vlc sends various ioctls to the
drive and that requires more responsiveness than a file can provide.

 Maybe you could just mount the disc and then copy the whole files on
your hard-disk. libdvdread has support for DVD copied in this manner and
vlc has libdvdread support :)

 We at least tried that out succesfully.

 Please note that - as far as I get it - libdvdread is only _needed_ for
encrypted DVD and is not built in vlc by default. You have to enable it
at the configure stage (./configure --with-dvdread).
